Native to tropical Africa, the erect annual herb is grown mainly for its oil. It is also one of the oldest condiments known to man. Nigeria is one of the major producers of sesame seed in Africa. Nigerian sesame plant is mainly rain fed and thrives well on drained soil. Nigerian sesame seeds have a high oil content . There are mainly two varieties of sesame seed grown in Nigeria. They are the golden Kano variety and the white Benue variety .The seeds are available in natural or hulled form and both the varieties are internationally well accepted .

Uses of Sesame

Sesame  seeds have been enjoyed by humans since the dawn of civilization. The seeds have a nutty flavor and are a good source of protein and calcium. Sesame seeds are used in many cuisines worldwide in both sweet and savoury dishes.  Sesame oil is reported to be cholesterol free and contains a high proportion of the good polyunsaturated fats and vitamin E.
